On December 18, 2024, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Macao at 4:08 PM to kick off a three-day visit marking the 25th anniversary of the region's return to Chinese sovereignty. This visit also coincides with the inauguration of Macao’s sixth government.
Upon his arrival at Macao International Airport, Xi was welcomed with a red carpet, a podium, and a convoy of traffic police. A reception party of 500 people, including students and youth representatives, greeted him with traditional dragon and lion dances, symbolizing national prosperity and good fortune.
This is Xi's first visit to Macao since 2019, when he celebrated the 20th anniversary of the handover. Expressing his happiness at returning, Xi noted the significant progress achieved under the "One Country, Two Systems" framework, which allows Macao to maintain its unique identity while aligning with national goals.
During his stay, Xi plans to engage with various sectors of Macao's society, focusing on future development and addressing key issues impacting residents. His visit emphasizes the central government's commitment to Macao's stability and prosperity, especially amid recent global challenges.
Xi has previously outlined four key hopes for Macao's development: enhancing governance, promoting economic diversification, improving living standards, and fostering social harmony. These aims are designed to guide Macao towards a sustainable future while preserving its cultural identity.
In light of the anniversary celebrations, heightened security measures have been implemented across Macao. Notably, maritime transport services have been temporarily suspended. Turbojet services announced the halt of all ferry operations between Hong Kong and Macao starting at 3:30 PM on the day of Xi’s arrival, following a government directive to close surrounding waterways. Affected passengers can choose to receive refunds or reschedule their trips.
Xi’s visit not only celebrates the anniversary but also supports broader initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation and development within the Greater Bay Area, which includes Macao, Hong Kong, and several cities in Guangdong province. This strategic effort aims to boost regional integration and economic resilience, positioning Macao as a vital player in China's development plans.
