U.S. Commerce Secretary Raimondo spoke at the "Reagan Defense Forum" held in Simi Valley, California, and said that Beijing is "the greatest threat we have ever encountered." She also emphasized that "China is not our friend."
Raimondo noted that Nvidia is the maker of the most complex chips needed to develop the latest generation of artificial intelligence. Nvidia develops chips with slightly lower performance and exports them to China to comply with restrictions imposed by the U.S. Department of Commerce. "That's what industry does," Raimondo acknowledged, "but," she added, "it doesn't work very well."
She said: “China is trying to figure out how to get around our export controls every day...and that means every minute, every second, we have to be more vigilant, tighten these restrictions and enforce them more seriously with our allies. "
She emphasized that the United States leads the world in both artificial intelligence and semiconductor design, thanks to American private enterprises.
"We will never let (China) catch up," she said.
