The two sewer workers have died after fallen ill of inhaling a suspicious toxic gas when cleaning the manhole in Sha Tin late on Monday.

The emergency services were informed at around midnight reporting that two workers had fallen ill while cleaning in the underground at the Yuen Wo Playground.

It was stated by the authorities that there were indications the two dead workers and two other men who also fell ill while working in the manhole, inhaled hydrogen sulfide.

According to the Drainage Services Department, the men were employed by a contractor to clean sewers using high-pressure water jets as the job should not have required them to go inside the manhole.

However, the two men who were said to be 26 and 34 years old were pronounced dead at the Prince of Wales Hospital while the two other workers were also treated at the same hospital.

The department said it had ordered a halt to work at the site and paused all similar work elsewhere until it could conduct safety checks.

The incident had been  classified as an industrial accident while the Drainage Service Department had ordered to stop the work any similar works elsewhere as well until all proper safety checks and measures are made and followed.

An investigation had been launched by the department to look into the incident, authorities said.
