Two female shoppers were stabbed to death in a barbaric knife attack on Friday. The assailant was eventually overpowered by the police.
The incident that happened on the 3rd floor at Plaza Hollywood shopping centre, Diamond Hill shortly after 5 pm involved a 39-year-old male assailant, police said.
A witness said one of the 2 females attacked was stabbed at least 34 times. The police spokesman said the pair later died in hospital.
The video that emerged online shortly after the attack showed the two women walking along together in the mall corridor before the attacker started to stab one of them in the back many times. The woman fell to the floor while the man continues to stab her forcefully. In the video, the second woman was making a little effort to push the attacker away and dragged the injured woman for a short distance before the man paused a while and faced her too for a moment before continuing his target.
After a few efforts to help her companion and failed, the man left the one lying motionless on the floor and continued to chase after her too. The clip shows no passers-by daring to come forward and offer help to the two women.
The two unconscious victims, aged 22 and 26, were taken to United Christian Hospital for treatment. The police spokesman said the pair later died in hospital.
The police arrived after 15 minutes at the scene, overpowered the assailant and took away the 15cm long knife from him. The place was cordoned off for further investigation.
The suspect was taken to Wong Tai Sin Police Station and is being held for questioning. Detectives from the Kowloon East regional crime unit are handling the case, which has been classified as murder.
