Transgender Activist Henry Edward Tse Successfully Changes Gender Markers on ID Card

In a significant victory for transgender rights, Henry Edward Tse, a prominent transgender activist, has obtained a new identification card with updated gender markers. Tse, a 33-year-old transgender man, fought tirelessly for seven years to have his gender changed from female to male on his official HKID cards.

Tse, who was assigned female at birth but experienced gender dysphoria, underwent a partial sex-reassignment surgery to remove his breasts. However, his initial request to change the gender markers on his ID cards was rejected by the Immigration Department, citing the requirement of a full surgery that includes the removal of the uterus, ovaries, and the construction of an artificial penis.

In a landmark ruling last year, the Court of Final Appeal declared that the Immigration Department had violated the rights of Tse and another transgender man by denying them the right to amend their Hong Kong ID cards. Following this decision, Tse expressed his joy and relief outside the Wan Chai Immigration Tower, where he received his new ID card.

Tse emphasized the profound significance of the new ID card not only for himself but also for the entire transgender community. He stated that it would put an end to the numerous embarrassing situations and difficulties he had faced due to incorrect identification. However, he also highlighted the need to address the ongoing issues of unfair treatment and human rights violations faced by transgender individuals, despite the alignment of current Immigration Department policies with the court's judgment.

This successful outcome marks the culmination of a seven-year-long legal battle for Tse, who expressed gratitude to his supporters and acknowledged that there are still more challenges to overcome in the pursuit of equality and justice.

The achievement of Henry Edward Tse serves as a milestone in the fight for transgender rights in Hong Kong, providing hope and inspiration to others striving for recognition and acceptance.
