Three individuals have been arrested by the police in relation to a theft incident that occurred in Tsim Sha Tsui. The theft took place last Friday at a second-hand shop, where 14 HERMÈS handbags with an estimated value of HK$1.8 million were stolen. Authorities were able to recover approximately HK$600,000 in cash, but the stolen handbags are still missing.
The incident unfolded in the morning when a perpetrator, dressed in black and wearing a cap, was captured on surveillance cameras breaking the glass door of the shop located on Observatory Road. Within a span of five minutes, the thief managed to loot the handbags. Senior Inspector Chong Tak-him from the Yau Tsim district crime squad stated that, following an extensive investigation, the police successfully identified the thief and discovered that he had stored the stolen handbags in a hotel room in Kwun Tong.
Subsequently, the handbags were transported to a pharmacy in Sheung Shui and sold to a mainland Chinese woman in exchange for a significant sum of cash. The thief then evaded the authorities by utilizing various public transportation methods. On Monday night, the police apprehended the 36-year-old thief and his 38-year-old girlfriend, who was allegedly involved in money laundering activities, in a hotel room in North Point. The thief was reportedly unemployed, while his girlfriend worked as a clerk. The authorities seized around HK$400,000 in cash from the hotel room and an additional HK$200,000 from the girlfriend's residence.
On Tuesday, the police made another arrest, detaining a 52-year-old female owner of the Sheung Shui pharmacy. The woman, who holds a two-way permit, was arrested for her alleged involvement in handling the proceeds of the crime. All three individuals have been remanded in custody. The police have not ruled out the possibility of making further arrests, and efforts are underway to locate the missing handbags.
