In a historic moment in Singapore's first contentious presidential election in more than a decade, former prime minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has been chosen by Singaporeans as the next president with a major mandate.
The Elections Department (ELD) declared Tharman the winner with an impressive 1,746,427 votes, or 70.4% of the total number of valid votes cast (more than 2.48 million). The announcement was made at 12.22am on Saturday after a day of intense voting.
However, there were 50,152 rejected ballots, indicating that some voters chose other candidates or expressed dissatisfaction.
A total of 2.71 million Singaporeans exercised their democratic rights during nine days of intense campaigning and cooling-off days, casting their votes at 1,264 polling stations from 8am to 8pm.
The first signs of Tharman's landslide victory emerged with the release of the sample count at 10.42pm. On Friday, that already suggested he was ahead with 70 percent of the vote.
The final result was officially announced by electoral officer Tan Meng Dui, cementing Tharman's victory. Ng Kok Song, the former chief investment officer of GIC, ranked second with 390,041 votes, accounting for 15.72% of the valid votes, which is commendable.
