Temperature in Hong Kong's Urban Areas Expected to Drop to 10°C Tonight, Followed by 7°C Tomorrow

Hong Kong is bracing for a significant drop in temperature in its urban areas, as an intense winter monsoon sweeps across the region. According to the Hong Kong Observatory, the city will experience cloudy weather with a chance of rain showers throughout the day, followed by a gradual decrease in temperature.

Tonight, temperatures in the urban areas are expected to plummet from an initial 17 degrees Celsius to around 10 degrees Celsius. The New Territories may experience even lower temperatures. The temperature range for the day is anticipated to be between 10 and 19 degrees Celsius, accompanied by gentle to moderate northerly winds. These winds are expected to strengthen over offshore and high-ground areas.

As of 5:50 AM this morning, most districts in Hong Kong recorded temperatures averaging around 15 or 16 degrees Celsius. The coldest temperature, 9.2 degrees Celsius, was reported at Tai Mo Shan, while Tat Kwu Ling recorded a temperature of 13.9 degrees Celsius. In response to the approaching cold weather, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a strong monsoon signal and a cold weather warning, advising citizens to take precautions and dress warmly.

There is a possibility of ice formation on high ground, and the wind chill effect will make the perceived temperature even lower. The Observatory issued a special weather reminder at midnight, emphasizing the impact of the intense winter monsoon on the coastal areas of South China over the next day or two. The northerly winds are expected to strengthen further today, contributing to the drop in temperature.

Tomorrow's weather is forecasted to be overcast with a few rain showers. It will be extremely cold, with temperatures dropping to around 7 degrees Celsius in urban areas and slightly lower in the New Territories. High-ground areas may experience ice formation. The wind chill effect will make the perceived temperature even colder than the actual air temperature. Citizens are advised to take precautions to stay warm and pay special attention to the well-being of the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. The cold spell is expected to continue through Wednesday (January 24) and Thursday morning (January 25).

In light of the upcoming cold weather, the Social Welfare Department (SWD) has issued a reminder for the elderly to take necessary precautions to protect themselves. It is particularly important for frail elderly individuals, especially those living alone, to receive care and support from their relatives, friends, and neighbors. The Home Affairs Department has also taken proactive measures by setting up 18 temporary shelters across various districts, effective immediately. These shelters aim to provide assistance to individuals who require help during this period. The shelters will remain operational as long as the Cold Weather Warning is in effect.
