Tatler Asia sues Inter Miami CF over Messi's no-show in Hong Kong match

Tatler Asia is taking legal action against Inter Miami CF due to Lionel Messi's absence from an exhibition match held in Hong Kong in February. The match, which had promised Messi's participation for at least 45 minutes, left fans disappointed and resulted in significant financial losses for the organizer.

Despite selling tickets with the expectation of seeing the Argentine superstar, Messi did not appear in the match, citing an injury as the reason for his absence. This no-show caused widespread dissatisfaction among fans and posed a financial setback for Tatler Asia, a company renowned for its luxury lifestyle magazines and e-commerce ventures.

In response to the situation, Tatler Asia offered a 50% refund to ticket holders five days after the event. However, these unexpected refunds amounted to approximately HK$56 million, turning the projected profit of HK$13 million into a staggering loss of HK$43 million. Tatler Asia made these financial details public in an effort to transparently address the aftermath of the event.

According to the contractual agreement with Inter Miami CF, Messi was expected to play alongside teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suárez, unless injured. The breach of this agreement not only impacted Tatler Asia's financial standing but also tarnished the intended reputation-building event for Hong Kong on the global stage.

Adding to the disappointment, Messi and Suárez participated in a subsequent match in Japan on February 7th. Tatler Asia described this as a "resounding slap" to their efforts and commitments, expressing deep regret over the lack of respect shown towards eagerly anticipating fans.

The consequences of Messi's no-show extend beyond immediate refunds. Tatler Asia was set to receive government grants and endorsements worth up to HK$16 million, which would have resulted in profits of HK$29 million if the event had gone as planned. However, Messi's absence undermined the successful execution of the event, leading to the loss of these funds.

Legal experts suggest that this case could establish a precedent for enforcing contractual obligations in high-profile sports engagements, particularly when player appearances are heavily promoted and integral to the event's success.

Through the lawsuit, Tatler Asia seeks compensation for the financial damages incurred and the impact on their reputation. The company had intended to host a prestigious event to showcase Hong Kong's vibrant culture and global appeal through sports. Unfortunately, the incident has left both the organizer and fans disheartened, overshadowing what was meant to be a landmark moment for the city.
