Taiwan Struck by Multiple Earthquakes, Strongest Recorded at 6.1 Magnitude

Taiwan experienced a series of earthquakes during the early hours of Saturday, with the most powerful quake reaching a magnitude of 6.1, as reported by the Central Weather Administration of the island. Although no tsunami warnings were issued, the seismic activity triggered mobile phone alarms in the capital city of Taipei. These quakes occurred just a few days after numerous tremors shook the region.

The strongest earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the magnitude scale, occurred at 2:21 am local time (18:21 GMT) off the coast. It had a shallow depth of 24.9 kilometers (15.5 miles). Following this, several smaller aftershocks were observed, culminating in another strong quake at 2:49 am (18:49 GMT). This second earthquake took place on land, approximately 40 kilometers from Hualien City on the east coast, at a depth of 18.9 kilometers.

Taiwan's weather agency recorded a total of ten earthquakes of varying magnitudes after midnight on Saturday. However, there have been no immediate reports of any significant damage caused by these seismic events. These recent quakes are believed to be aftershocks resulting from a deadly magnitude-7.4 earthquake that struck the island over two weeks ago, which was described as the strongest in 25 years by Taiwanese authorities. The earlier earthquake caused the loss of 17 lives, triggered landslides, and inflicted severe damage to buildings in and around Hualien City.

The National Fire Agency has not reported any immediate damage resulting from the recent series of earthquakes. Taiwanese authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
