On January 13, 2024, Taiwan held its presidential and legislative elections amidst increasing tensions with Beijing. The elections, which took place from 8 am to 4 pm, saw a high turnout of Taiwanese citizens who were eager to determine the future leadership of the island.

Three presidential candidates were competing for the top office: Ko Wen-je from the Taiwan People's Party, Lai Ching-te from the Democratic Progressive Party, and Hou Yu-ih from the Kuomintang. In addition to the presidential race, 113 legislative seats were up for grabs. The elections occurred amidst strong warnings from China, which presented the choice for Taiwanese voters as one between war and peace, urging the island to accept its sovereignty claims.

The Democratic Progressive Party, known for its stance against China's territorial assertions, sought a third term while promoting a separate Taiwanese identity. The other candidates, Hou Yu-ih and Ko Wen-je, advocated for re-engagement with China while emphasizing Taiwan's democracy and way of life.

The legislative elections were also significant as a lack of a clear majority could hinder the new president's legislative agenda, particularly regarding defense spending. The international community, including China, the United States, and Japan, closely monitored the election results, expecting them to impact cross-strait relations and broader geopolitical dynamics. Secretary of State Antony Blinken of the United States met with Liu Jianchao, head of the Communist Party's diplomatic arm, underscoring the importance of stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The outcome of the elections not only had implications for Taiwan but also influenced US-China relations and global economic and security landscapes.
