Sweden Expels Chinese Journalist, Citing National Security Concerns

Updated: Apr 9

Sweden has recently expelled a Chinese journalist, claiming that she posed a threat to national security, according to reports from Swedish media. The journalist, an unnamed 57-year-old woman, was apprehended by the Swedish security service in October and subsequently expelled by the Swedish government last week. She has been prohibited from returning to the country.

The woman had been residing in Sweden for approximately 20 years and held a valid residence permit. She was married to a Swedish man and had children with him. It has been reported that the journalist had established contacts with the Chinese Embassy and individuals in Sweden associated with the Chinese government.

The journalist's lawyer, Leutrim Kadriu, stated that his client does not believe she poses a threat to Sweden. Due to the nature of the case being a matter of national security, Kadriu explained that many details remain undisclosed.

In neighboring Norway, it was revealed that the journalist had also reported from there, as well as other Nordic countries including Denmark, Finland, and Iceland.

Tensions between Sweden and China have been palpable for several years. In 2020, a Chinese-born Swedish national named Gui Minhai was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a court in eastern China for selling books critical of the ruling Communist Party. Gui was charged with "illegally providing intelligence overseas." Sweden's calls for Gui's release were rebuked by China.

Gui Minhai's disappearance in 2015, believed to be an abduction by Chinese agents from his residence in Thailand, prompted an investigation into Sweden's ambassador to China regarding her involvement in arranging a meeting between Gui's daughter and two Chinese businessmen who allegedly threatened Gui. The ambassador, Anna Lindstedt, was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.

In 2018, a Swedish court convicted a man of spying for China by gathering information on Tibetan refugees in Sweden. Dorjee Gyantsan, a Tibetan working for a pro-Tibetan radio station, was found guilty of "gross illegal intelligence activity" and sentenced to 22 months in jail.

The expulsion of the Chinese journalist further underscores the strained relationship between Sweden and China. The case highlights the ongoing tensions between the two countries regarding issues of national security and freedom of the press.
