As Super Typhoon Yinxing draws closer to the southern coast of China, the Observatory is set to issue a standby signal No. 1 between noon and 3 PM today. The typhoon was reported to be near the northern part of Luzon and had come within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong by midnight yesterday. At 4 PM on the same day, Yinxing was approximately 460 kilometers north-northeast of Manila.
Forecasts indicate that Yinxing will travel west at about 14 kilometers per hour, skirting the northern Luzon region. While approaching Hong Kong, its intensity is expected to decrease, with maximum sustained winds dropping from 175 kilometers to 165 kilometers per hour. By Sunday, when Yinxing is anticipated to be closest to Hong Kong, winds could further diminish to 155 kilometers per hour.
The Observatory noted that the issuance of higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals will depend on Yinxing's proximity to the Pearl River Estuary, its strength, and local wind conditions. The combination of Yinxing and the northeast monsoon is likely to bring scattered showers to Guangdong's coast over the weekend, accompanied by windy conditions offshore and in elevated areas.
Today, the northeast monsoon will continue to contribute to fine and dry weather in Guangdong as Yinxing moves across the northern South China Sea. However, the typhoon's intensity remains uncertain. Looking ahead to the middle of next week, an easterly airstream is expected to impact the Guangdong coast, while a broad area of low pressure may lead to unsettled weather in the waters east of the Philippines.
According to the China Meteorological Administration, Yinxing has reached maximum sustained winds of 209 kilometers per hour. Although it is predicted to weaken after passing through the Luzon Strait, there is a possibility it may regain super typhoon status tomorrow when it is approximately 400 kilometers south of Hong Kong, before weakening again by Sunday.
