Singapore has risen to another win to become the sixth most peaceful country in the world according to a report by the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2023. The country improved from the ninth position it was situated in last year to sixth position this year by the GPI rating.
The report said 99.7 per cent of the world’s population was considered within 163 countries in the world by GPI, measuring the index level of peacefulness across three main factors which are the level of Societal Safety and Security; the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and the degree of Militarisation.
The reports said further that within a year the total average level of peacefulness worldwide dropped by 0.42 per cent. This has been said to be unfortunately marking the ninth year that global peacefulness has declined.
Generally, peacefulness improved in 84 countries and deteriorated in 79. However, the scores indicate that the deterioration in peacefulness is generally larger than the improvements, the reports said.
Additionally, citing the Asia-Pacific region, it is worth noting that there has been a slight increase of 0.32 per cent in the level of peacefulness in this year's GPI. This slight boost in peacefulness is a result of improvements in both safety and security, as well as reduced militarization. This positive shift can be attributed to factors such as a decrease in violent demonstrations and an increase in funding for UN peacekeeping efforts.
In this year's rating, the country that tops the index in the region is New Zealand, seconded by Singapore, and then Japan.
According to the GPI, the following are the top 10 most peaceful countries in the world and their scores as of 2023;
• Iceland (1.124)
• Denmark (1.31)
• Ireland (1.312)
• New Zealand (1.313)
• Austria (1.316)
• Singapore (1.332)
• Portugal (1.333)
• Slovenia (1.334)
• Japan (1.336)
• Switzerland (1.339)
