Singapore Outpaces SAR in Attracting Global Corporations

According to a recent report by Bloomberg Intelligence, Singapore has emerged as the preferred destination in Asia for multinational corporations, overshadowing its main rival, Hong Kong. The city-state currently hosts regional headquarters for 4,200 multinational firms, significantly surpassing Hong Kong's count of 1,336.

Even Chinese companies, seeking to mitigate geopolitical risks and expand their reach, are choosing Singapore over Hong Kong. The report highlights several factors contributing to Singapore's appeal, including its stronger relations with the West, a more diverse talent pool, a resilient and diversified economy, and attractive tax incentives. Singapore's political stability and freedom are also seen as advantages amidst elevated geopolitical tensions in the region.

While Hong Kong has solidified its position as China's finance center by effectively managing political protests and adhering to the country's zero-Covid policy during the pandemic, Singapore has positioned itself as an independent and favored location for international business offices. Additionally, Singapore offers targeted incentives for foreign companies looking to establish regional hubs.

Singapore's list of companies with regional headquarters reads like a Who's Who of multinationals, including prominent names such as FedEx, Microsoft, Google (Alphabet), Mead Johnson, Rolls-Royce, and General Motors. Even companies operating in sensitive environments, such as TikTok and online fashion giant Shein, have established business hubs in the Southeast Asian city. Chinese companies like Nio, an electric-vehicle maker, as well as tech giants Alibaba and Huawei, are also expanding their operations in Singapore.

Given Singapore's corporate critical mass and a more diversified economy, the report predicts that Singapore will attract even more global business than Hong Kong in the next five years.
