During a severe weather warning issued by the Hong Kong Observatory on Tuesday evening, a number of flights heading to Hong Kong were diverted to alternate airports in the Pearl River Delta and Taiwan due to violent storms and hail in certain areas.

The Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal, indicating significant adverse conditions, resulted in the rerouting of at least ten commercial flights, primarily operated by Cathay Pacific. Among these, flights originating from Narita, Hanoi, and Melbourne were redirected to Kaohsiung Airport in Taiwan. Similarly, flights CX708 and TG602 from Bangkok found themselves rerouted to Macao Airport.

Furthermore, five other flights arriving from Shanghai, Singapore, Taipei, Zhengzhou, and Xiamen were compelled to land at Shenzhen Airport. This major operational disruption affected hundreds of passengers, diverting them far from their intended destination.

One particularly notable diversion involved Hong Kong Express flight UO183 from Taichung. After circling south of Hong Kong for an extended period, it was forced to return to Taiwan and eventually landed at Taipei Taoyuan Airport. Passengers and crew on board experienced what some described as a "two-hour aerial detour."

The severe weather conditions and subsequent diversions caused inconvenience and disruptions for both travelers and airlines. Passengers were inconvenienced by the unexpected changes in their travel plans, while airlines had to adapt their operations to ensure the safety of their passengers and crew.

It is important for airlines and airports to have contingency plans in place to handle such weather-related disruptions and minimize the impact on passengers. Despite the challenges, the safety and well-being of passengers remain the top priority in such situations.
