Severe Typhoon Gaemi Approaches Southeastern China, Strong Monsoon Signal Under Consideration by HKO

July 25, 2024 - Severe Typhoon Gaemi is currently crossing the Taiwan Strait and is projected to make landfall over Fujian later today. As the typhoon moves inland towards southeastern China, it is expected to maintain a distance of over 500 kilometers from Hong Kong.

Unless Gaemi takes a more westerly track after hitting Fujian, the typhoon's circulation is likely to remain relatively far from the Pearl River Estuary, resulting in a relatively low probability of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) issuing a tropical cyclone warning signal for Hong Kong.

Simultaneously, the southwest monsoon in the northern part of the South China Sea is forecasted to intensify throughout the day. Offshore winds are expected to strengthen, potentially reaching gale force on higher ground later today and possibly into tomorrow. The HKO will carefully monitor local wind conditions and consider issuing the Strong Monsoon Signal accordingly.

While Gaemi's outer subsiding air continues to influence the region, today's temperatures will remain extremely hot, with some areas experiencing temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or higher. The high temperatures may trigger thundery showers later in the day. Additionally, coastal areas can expect more showers and a few squally thunderstorms on Friday and throughout the weekend.
