The vice-chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Rocky Tuan Sung-chi has resigned from the top post, the report said.
According to the report, Tuan on Tuesday said he made his decision as a new governance structure had been implemented following the amendment of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance.
“I believe now is an opportune moment for the university to search for a new vice-chancellor and president,” Professor Tuan said.
“Serving the CUHK community has been an extraordinary honour and a privilege. Hong Kong is my home. It was humbling to be given the opportunity to return here and be entrusted with the noble responsibility to deliver the core mission of this great institution.” he added.
The 72-year-old Professor said that he would stay in the role for one year as part of the leadership transition.
John Chai Yat-Chiu, the chairman of the CUHK council, said he received Tuan's letter on Monday, Jan 8.
It was learned earlier that Professor Tuan has been recently battling as Hong Kong's lawmakers are making plans to overhaul the institution’s governing council. Meanwhile, Tuan had failed to present at any Legislative Council meetings on the matter, citing illnesses, the report said.
The resignation news was after CUHK's vice-president and secretary Eric Ng Shu-pui, who was said to be Tuan's right-hand man, was fired by the CUHK Council last month, with the Council saying they can no longer trust Ng to support their work.
The earlier report said Ng signed a petition with some 1,200 university alumni in July to oppose a Legislative Council bill to downsize the Council.
At the same time, Professor Tuan was condemned during the 2019 protest as he was accused of being too sympathetic towards student protesters.
Professor Rocky S. Tuan assumed office as the eighth Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 1 January 2018. Born and raised in Hong Kong, he pursued further studies in the United States and received his PhD in Life Sciences in 1977 from Rockefeller University in New York.
