Passengers evacuated from Hong Kong MTR train after smoke incident

During the morning rush hour on Wednesday, passengers on an MTR train in Hong Kong were safely evacuated after smoke was observed emanating from beneath the train carriages. The incident occurred as the southbound train of the East Rail line arrived at Kowloon Tong station at approximately 8:50 am, with the smoke becoming visible near platform No. 1.

Prompt action was taken, and all passengers were promptly evacuated from the train. Service on the line resumed shortly after at around 8:55 am, ensuring minimal disruption to commuters. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries resulting from the incident.


Following the evacuation, the affected train was transferred to Mong Kok East station. Firefighters swiftly responded to the incident, arriving at approximately 9:05 am, a mere five minutes after being alerted.


In response to the situation, the Fire Services Department deployed a significant number of resources, including 13 fire trucks, one ambulance, and a rapid response vehicle, to ensure the safety and well-being of those involved.


The cause of the smoke has not yet been determined, and an investigation is underway. By 11:14 am, the smoke had dissipated.
