Kris Hope Vargas was found wandering Tsim Sha Tsui late last month, apparently suffering from mental illness, and her family were shocked when they learned she had been found and taken to Kwai Chung Psychiatric Hospital for treatment Pleased.
Welfare officials from the Consulate General's Migrant Workers' Office said today that they were aware of Chris' whereabouts and would visit her.
The Filipino's cousin, who has been in contact with the media about the case, said they hoped Chris would be sent home after treatment, although they realized she had an overstay case pending.
But now, they are reassured that she is safe at the hospital and no longer wandering around.
They first learned of her situation on Nov. 27, when they received a Facebook post asking for help for Kris, 32. Kris looked disheveled and was reportedly walking around aimlessly in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Separately, a concerned Filipino appealed for help on behalf of another 32-year-old maid, claiming she was being held against her will at a public hospital.
Mary Y, who only arrived in Hong Kong last year, also shared a photo of herself lying on a hospital bed, her legs tied to each bedpost. She also went on a tirade, accusing someone of being bossing her every move.
Her friend Mitch shared the post on the Migrant Workers Social Justice Facebook page and said it took the page's administrators five days to post it. Last she heard, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration had offered help.
Mitch said she and some other friends had not seen Mary for a month and were shocked when they saw her disturbing posts, adding that she was banned from using her phone and talking to other people.
But when they expressed concerns, she blocked them all from her account. Luckily, one of their mutual friends managed to take a screenshot of the post so she was able to share it with others.
An examination by Social Welfare Officer Rem Marcelino revealed that Mary had indeed suffered a mental breakdown but was recovering well enough to be sent home, where OWWA was helping her until she returned home to the Philippines.
Marcelino said Marie was lucky because her employer was very friendly and her family in the Philippines was supportive.
But it's unclear what caused Mary's breakdown.
Kris Hope Vargas
