Ocean Park, Hong Kong is expecting a new pair of giant pandas to arrive in Hong Kong from mainland China and believe that the two would adapt quickly to their new environment under the park’s customized care.
Earlier, Hong Kong's leader John Lee Ka Chiu Lee had a three-day visit to Sichuan, China and told reporters that the male panda weighs around 120 kilograms and possesses a lively and intelligent nature. The female panda weighs around 100 kg and has a gentle, docile temperament. The pandas selected are between 5 and 8 years old. They were said to arrive before National Day on October 1.
The two new highly anticipated pandas happened to be the third of its kind that the central government will arrange as a gift to the city.
An assistant curator of Ocean Park’s zoological operations who was speaking in a newspaper interview said the park will design different environments for the pandas, with the pandas able to quickly adapt regardless of their personalities.
She added that the giant pandas have a unique personality, much like humans. Therefore, the park will equip the enclosure with various facilities to mimic their natural habitat as closely as possible.
The panda care team has already started selecting suitable bamboo species for the new pandas. Professionals are also ready to support the pandas' quarantine period when they arrive in Hong Kong, it was further added.
The park will transport bamboo from Guangdong Province to Sichuan first, allowing the two pandas to acclimate before arrival in Hong Kong. During their transition period after arrival, they will also be fed bamboo from Sichuan.
