MTR Introduces Half-Price Day and Increased Service Frequency on Lantern Festival

In celebration of the Lantern Festival, which coincides with the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) has announced a special half-price day as a token of appreciation to its passengers. This promotional offer will be available on selected routes, including the Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau stations on the East Rail Line. However, it's important to note that the Airport Express and additional charges for first-class service on the East Rail Line are excluded from this promotion.

To accommodate the increased passenger demand, the MTR will enhance the frequency of train services on six lines throughout the day, adding approximately 370 additional train trips. The Light Rail network will also deploy more dual-carriage trams to ensure smooth passenger flow.

The introduction of the half-price day is part of the MTR's fare adjustment mechanism, which requires the implementation of a half-price day when the railway's service performance is disrupted and incurs penalties of HK$25 million. This upcoming half-price day aligns with the Lantern Festival tomorrow.

Passengers using Octopus cards for MTR, Light Rail, and New Territories Northwest bus journeys, as well as those utilizing QR codes for MTR rides, will enjoy the half-price fare discount. However, it's important to note that this discount does not apply to contactless credit card or debit card payments.

For individuals planning to celebrate the Lantern Festival by traveling to the northern parts of Hong Kong, the half-price discount is applicable to transit journeys between the Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau stations on the East Rail Line. It's worth mentioning that the discounted fare does not cover additional charges for first-class service, Airport Express rides, and MTR feeder bus services. Nonetheless, the discount can be combined with interchange discounts, concessionary fares, and the 25% discount for Monthly Pass holders.

Elderly passengers seeking the most cost-effective way to travel north can take advantage of the following example. On a regular day, the full fare from Admiralty Station to Lo Wu Station is HK$25.4, whereas the half-price fare would be approximately HK$12.7. On the half-price day, senior citizens can first travel to Sheung Shui Station for just HK$1, exit the station, and then re-enter to continue their journey to either Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau stations. The original fare for this route is HK$12.9, but with the half-price discount, it will be approximately HK$6.5. By adding the HK$1 fare to Sheung Shui, the total cost will be just HK$7.5, resulting in a savings of HK$5.2.

During the Lantern Festival half-price day, the MTR will increase train frequencies on six lines: the Island Line, South Island Line, Tsuen Wan Line, Kwun Tong Line, Tuen Ma Line, and East Rail Line. These increased frequencies will vary at different time periods, and a total of approximately 370 additional train trips will be added. Additionally, the Light Rail will operate more dual-carriage trams to accommodate the higher passenger volumes.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, the MTR will deploy extra staff at stations to assist commuters. They will closely monitor the railway's operations and make necessary adjustments to train services and manpower allocation based on actual demand. Ms. Linda Lai, Executive Director of Hong Kong Transport Services, expressed her hope that the combination of half-price fares and increased train frequencies will provide convenience for residents to celebrate the festive season with their friends and families.
