On February 19, 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico announced that the country would take legal action against Google if the tech giant continues to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" for users in the United States.

Sheinbaum stated that her government has communicated with Google, asserting that an executive order from former President Donald Trump only pertains to the section of the continental shelf that belongs to the U.S. In her letter, she emphasized that Mexico does not accept any alteration to the name of geographic areas that encompass its national territory.

Google has responded, clarifying that users in Mexico will still see "Gulf of Mexico" on its Maps app, while those in other countries may see both names.

This dispute highlights ongoing tensions regarding territorial nomenclature and national sovereignty.
