Man Sentenced to Life for Daughter's Murder

Writer: AfriHKa AfriHKa

On March 26, 2025, a man received a life sentence from High Court Judge Anna Lai Yuen-kee after being found guilty by a jury of the murder of his three-year-old daughter. The crime occurred in 2020 when Lau Kai-ping, 42, violently shook his daughter, Leung Nga-sze, leading to her death.

The court heard that Lau had willfully assaulted his daughter between May and July 18, 2020, and she tragically passed away on July 29, 2020, at Princess Margaret Hospital. An acute brain bleed, resulting from the violent shaking, was determined to be the cause of her death.

During the sentencing, Judge Lai rejected the defense's request for leniency, emphasizing the severity of the child abuse involved in the case. The Hong Kong Committee on Children's Rights expressed outrage over the inhumane treatment of Nga-sze and urged the government to create a new law to penalize bystanders who fail to protect children, completely ban corporal punishment, and align local laws with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
