In Hong Kong, a unique form of sexual service exists, performed by a sex worker in a residential unit.

It is an important part of the city's sex industry, although the venues are often kept secret and shunned by the public. A mainland woman who moved to Hong Kong recently found herself mistakenly renting an apartment on the same floor as a Jordanian sex worker.

To her embarrassment, three of the four units on this floor were operated as brothels. For advice, she turned to online forums, but was met with ridicule rather than help. Some suggested finding ways to take advantage of the situation, such as selling drinks and supplies to neighboring brothels.

Others suggest engaging with the community and taking advantage of business opportunities, such as selling energy drinks or treats. Some have even jokingly suggested joining the sex work industry, "if you can't beat them, join them", competing with other brothels to drive away their customers.

Some concerned people also advised her to move out as soon as possible to avoid scrutiny, highlighted the potential dangers of her living arrangements and encouraged her to choose safer options.

While engaging in the sex trade itself is not illegal, the main crime is organizing or controlling prostitution. Under Section 117 of Hong Kong's Crimes Ordinance, Cap. 200, any establishment primarily used for prostitution and involving more than two persons engaged in such activities is considered a "brothel". Anyone who manages, rents out or leases a brothel could face prosecution.

So even if sex workers provide their services collectively in the same location, with no intermediary commission, they can still be charged with running a brothel or relying on others for income from prostitution. As Hong Kong's definition of brothel tightened, the residential unit business model emerged as a way to circumvent legal restrictions. It allows individual sex workers to provide services within their own housing complex, thereby avoiding legal disputes.
