Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Hits Near Taiwan; Hong Kong Reports Minor Shaking

On January 21, 2025, at 12:17 AM, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Taiwan. The Hong Kong Observatory identified the epicenter at coordinates 23.14N and 120.59E, approximately 41 kilometers south-southeast of Jiayi and about 670 kilometers east of Hong Kong. The earthquake occurred at a focal depth of around 10 kilometers.

Following the quake, the Observatory received over a hundred reports from residents in Hong Kong who experienced minor shaking that lasted for a few seconds. The initial assessment recorded a local intensity of III (three) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, indicating that the tremor was felt indoors, similar to the vibrations caused by passing light trucks.
