The Argentine's star footballer and league soccer club Inter Miami's captain, Lionel Messi has spoken about his failure to join the team for the highly anticipated Inter Miami’s friendly match in Hong Kong on Sunday.
Messi said that it was “a shame” thigh muscle discomfort that made it difficult for him to play and that he hoped to return “whenever he can”.
Messi said on Tuesday in Tokyo after leaving Hong Kong for the next stage of the Inter Miami team’s tour that he had wanted to take part in the game in the city.
“It was bad luck that I couldn’t play in the Hong Kong match,” the 36-year-old Argentinian Messi spoke at the press conference before Inter Miami’s friendly against J-League champions Vissel Kobe at the Japan National Stadium on Wednesday.
He continued by saying “But the truth is that it is a shame that I was not able to participate.”
“I had an MRI and it came out that I had an oedema in the adductor,” he said, referring to swelling caused by fluid trapped in the body.
However, he said that he now had “very good feelings” compared to a few days ago, and he would try joining the training session in Japan on Tuesday afternoon.
The event organiser Tatler Asia and the Hong Kong government were greatly disappointed over the inability of Messi to play in the match as fans were very enthusiastic to seize the opportunity they had to see him.
In response to the disappointment, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Tuesday urged Tatler Asia to disclose details of its deal with the US football club and address the demands of disappointed fans. Tatler Asia announced on Monday that it was withdrawing its application for HK$16 million (US$2.04 million) in government sponsorship for the event.
The most expensive tickets went for US$625 while around 40,000 tickets were sold out for the event.
