Chief Executive John Lee Ka-Chiu said on Wednesday that the two giant pandas gifted by Beijing to Hong Kong would be ready for the public to greet on December 8 while their new names are to be declared a day before their first appearance to the public.
A couple of months ago, the two gifted giant pandas by Beijing, known as An An and Ke Ke, arrived in the city from Sichuan province to mark the 27th anniversary of handing over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China.
Hong Kong leader said on social media today that the pair of pandas have already been in the city for two months and are now adapting to their new home at Ocean Park.
“I am pleased to announce that the government and Ocean Park will hold a ‘Panda Debut Ceremony’ on December 7 this year, and the pandas will officially meet the public the following day, December 8,” Lee said.
Authorities earlier said the bears would need to go through a month-long quarantine with at least another month to adapt to their new environment.
Chief Executive also said he and his wife had recently visited the pandas along with Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, and described An An and Ke Ke as being “energetic and lively”.
“The park informed me that the pandas have adapted quickly to their new environment and are in a good condition,” he said.
The results of a public competition to decide on the duo’s new names would be announced at the ceremony on December 7, Lee said.
The city leader revealed more than 22,600 entries were received, while another 3,000 were submitted for a panda drawing competition.
“The enthusiastic response from the public reflects their love for the two pandas,” Lee said.
Three of Hong Kong’s six pandas will be available for public viewing in December.
The city’s first pair of locally born panda cubs were born in August this year. The “Elder Sister” and “Younger Brother” are not expected to be ready to meet the public until early next year while their mother, Ying Ying, is still recovering after giving birth.
