Jimmy Lai Accused of National Security Violations with Over HK$100 Million Transferred to Mark Simon

Jimmy Lai, the 76-year-old founder of Next Digital media, and three of his media companies are facing accusations of national security violations and inciting publications in violation of Hong Kong's National Security Law.

The prosecution presented evidence in court, including written statements from law enforcement officers, revealing that over HK$100 million was transferred to Mark Simon, allegedly for the benefit of pro-democracy individuals, over an eight-year period.

It was found that a significant portion of the deposits into Simon's bank account came from Jimmy Lai, with around HK$118 million transferred from 2013 to 2020. Approximately HK$93 million of these funds were then distributed across 72 transactions to various pro-democracy figures and parties.

The article also mentions that one of the defendants in a separate border-crossing case, Andy Li, received substantial payments, including three transfers totaling over HK$1.2 million. Another defendant, Chan Tsz-wah, received over HK$250,000 from sources including Jimmy Lai and Mark Simon.

The charges against the defendants include conspiracy to publish seditious publications and conspiring to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security. Jimmy Lai faces an additional individual charge of conspiracy in the same context.
