Inaugural Hong Kong Reading Week Launched by Hong Kong Public Libraries

Hong Kong Public Libraries has announced the launch of the first-ever Hong Kong Reading Week in collaboration with various stakeholders. Taking place from April 20th to 28th, this week-long event aims to promote a citywide reading culture and encourage the public to embrace the joy of reading.

The opening ceremony of Hong Kong Reading Week featured Mr. Kevin Yeung, the Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism, who highlighted the importance of reading. During the event, it was announced that the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) would organize over 200 online and offline library activities under the theme "Self/LIBRARY." These activities will provide opportunities for the public to experience the pleasure of reading.

As part of the initiative to promote Chinese culture, the Hong Kong Public Libraries will focus on books related to Chinese history, notable figures, and venerable traditions. To encourage readers to explore more literature, the maximum number of library items that can be loaned will increase from eight to 10 starting from April 23rd.

Aligned with the Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival theme "Arts and Action," the Hong Kong Public Libraries will introduce the Creative Writing Event and Roving Exhibition on "Chivalrous Heroes: My Favourite Characters in Martial Arts Novels." This platform will allow writing enthusiasts to showcase their creativity and integrate reading into their lives.

The inaugural Hong Kong Reading Week will offer a diverse range of activities suitable for all age groups, including dedicated events for parents and children. The Hong Kong Public Libraries will collaborate with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) to produce the radio program "One-minute Reading," where government officials, legislators, writers, athletes, and celebrities will share their reading tips and recommended book lists.

To further spread the message of reading, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra will create a themed music video for Hong Kong Reading Week, using familiar tunes to engage the public.

The Hong Kong Public Libraries will participate in the "2024 Hong Kong Reading+" carnival, organized by the Hong Kong Publishing Federation (HKPF) and sponsored by Create Hong Kong. This carnival, taking place from April 20th to 23rd, will feature activities such as a book fair, electronic reading experience zone, parent-child workshops, talks by renowned writers, and music performances. The HKPL will showcase its electronic resources and offer STEM workshops tailored for young readers.

In support of the first Hong Kong Reading for All Day on April 23rd, the Hong Kong Public Libraries, along with other stakeholders, will organize various activities. These include reading sessions at the Hong Kong Central Library and other venues, joint reading sessions in schools facilitated by the Education Bureau, participation in the "Read Together for Half an Hour" activities at the "Hong Kong Reading+" carnival, and the Hong Kong Inter-school Chinese Reading Contest finale and awards presentation ceremony.

The HKCL will also hold the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the 4.23 World Book Day Creative Competition, showcasing winning works by students from Hong Kong, Guangdong, and Macao. Public libraries in each district will introduce special bookshelves, thematic decorations, displays, game booths, and workshops related to Chinese culture to create an immersive reading environment.

The inaugural Hong Kong Reading Week, with its wide array of activities and initiatives, seeks to foster a love for reading and establish Hong Kong as a city of enthusiastic readers.
