Hong Kong, January 7, 2025 – The Immigration Department (ImmD) has conducted a series of territory-wide operations targeting illegal workers, named "Contribute," from December 30, 2024, to January 7, 2025. The focus of these operations was primarily on illegal renovation workers.
During the raids, ImmD Task Force officers targeted 88 locations, including ongoing renovation sites in newly constructed public housing estates. As a result, 26 suspected illegal workers, aged between 20 and 57, along with three suspected employers, aged 44 to 56, were apprehended.
In addition to enforcement actions, ImmD officers utilized a promotional vehicle to distribute leaflets advocating against the employment of illegal workers, raising awareness in the community.
A spokesperson for the ImmD stressed the serious consequences of violating immigration laws. Offenders can face fines of up to $50,000 and two years of imprisonment. The consequences for employers are even more severe, with penalties increased to $500,000 and up to 10 years in prison for employing unlawfully employable individuals. Employers are urged to verify the employment eligibility of potential hires to avoid legal repercussions, with failure to do so resulting in fines of up to $150,000 and one year of imprisonment.
Moreover, ImmD follows a standard procedure to screen vulnerable individuals, including illegal workers and immigrants, to identify potential victims of human trafficking. Those identified as trafficking victims receive comprehensive support services, including medical aid, counseling, and shelter. The ImmD encourages any victims to report crimes to relevant authorities for prompt assistance.
This operation underscores the ImmD's commitment to combating illegal employment and protecting vulnerable individuals within the community.
