Hong Kong government check on illegal public housing households has found out that at least 380 of them own private flats and necessary action has been taken against 60 of them for breaking the rule that was laid down that only the families in the most need could be rendered the help of public housing, the report said.
According to the Housing Authority, another 250,000 households have been ordered on Tuesday to declare if or not they own a local residential property by May end.
Also, the Housing Authority said an investigation is going on about 50 households that have failed to tender a required declaration of property ownership as part of an audit of 88,000 tenants carried out in October and November last year. The checks involved home visits and property searches.
Regarding the current rules of public rental housing, the tenants have to declare their income and assets every two years. But before, only those who have lived in a public housing block for ten years are required to make such a declaration.
The authority had assessed 59,000 households out of the 88,000 by February, and about 190 were confirmed as owning private property, the report said.
Additionally, the government also has recorded another 14,900 suspected cases. Among the 11,900 of those households examined, about 190 owned a private home.
It was revealed that out of the 380 cases, 110 flats have been returned to the authority, while it has issued notices to vacate the premises and initiated prosecutorial follow-up action against another 60 tenants.
