A 58-year-old Hong Kong woman by accident set her flat on fire on Friday morning when she was using a gas blow torch for cooking, causing injury to herself , other occupants and also killing four cats, the report said.
The incident happened at Tung Chung’s Yu Tai Court on Lantau Island at around 6.22 a.m., police said.
Police received a distress call from the woman who said her kitchen's cooking appliance was on fire.
According to the police, the investigation discovered that the woman used a gas blowtorch to cook and it accidentally caught fire, causing a fire outbreak in her apartment.
The report from the Fire Services Department said that the woman had second-degree burns across her body.
She was rushed by the paramedic to Princess Margaret Hospital in Lai Chi Kok for treatment while the other injured female occupants who were said to have been harmed by the smoke inhalation from the fire are being treated at North Lantau Hospital for smoke inhalation.
The report said four cats were found unconscious in the operation as well and all efforts to revive them by the responded Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were abortives. They were unfortunately dead, the Society spokesperson said.
The firemen extinguished the blaze not too long after 7 am while the case was still under investigation, police said.
