Hong Kong Victoria Harbour will be illuminated by the world's first Doraemon drone show this Saturday

The world-first Doraemon drone show, a popular Japanese cartoon character will illuminate Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour by one thousand drones at 7.30 pm on Saturday.

The show will be an introduction to the largest exhibition of the Doraemon, a Japanese cartoon character that is planned to come up in July in the city.

The 15-minute show will take place at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, with the drones forming breathtaking characters from the popular manga and animation series, as well as a few of Doraemon’s famed futuristic gadgets such as the travel portal Anywhere Door and flying machine Take-Copter. The performance will also feature local voice actors, it was said.

Doraemon is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Fujiko F. Fujio. The manga was first serialized in December 1969. Its chapters were collected in 45 tankobon volumes published by Shogakukan from 1974-1996. The story revolves around an earless robotic cat named Doraemon, who travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid a boy named Nobita Nobi.

Doraemon happened to be a major attraction in 2012 when 100 sculptures were showcased outside Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui by a Hong Kong-based art studio AllRights Reserved.

AllRightsReserved is the organiser of Doraemon drone show coming up in the city. It is also the company which exhibited the two giant rubber ducks in Victoria Harbour last year June.

The studio said it was collaborating with Fujiko Pro, the Japanese anime production company that also manages the Doraemon franchise, to put up the show.

AllRightsReserved said that it recommended that spectators to gather at the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui for the best sight of the drone show performance. It added that “areas along the Hong Kong Cultural Centre may have limited visibility angles for viewing”.

It also said spectators would not be able to “fully enjoy the show from the Hong Kong Island side”.
