Yiu was sentenced to 25 months in jail for theft at Kowloon City Law Court, Hong Kong.
A graduate of religion and philosophy in Hong Kong has been sentenced to 2 years and 1 month in jail for stealing HK$800,000 (US$102,000) from his university’s student union possession as financial secretary.
The 24-year-old man named Yiu Hei-chun was sentenced to jail in Kowloon City Court on Monday for two charges and was also ordered to pay HK$220,000 to his student union, the amount he could raise, as well as his family in restitution, the report said.
According to the report, Yiu said he wanted to invest the money to make a profit in the markets and use some as his mother’s medical bills payment.
The court hearing stated that the student looked for an administrator at Baptist University’s student union to sign two cheques after he pretended the money was for organising social events.
Wallis Chung Wing-sze, the Deputy Magistrate said Yiu had breached the trust placed in him as the union’s financial secretary adding that his money problems were not an excuse for breaking the law.
The report stated that Yiu deposited HK$800,000 in his savings account and transferred HK$600,000 of it into an investment account between February and May last year.
However, it was learnt that the president and vice-president of the union were not aware of the events that Yiu had declared he needed the money for after the enquiry.
The court hearing stated that the investment account had a balance of HK$510,000 by the time Yiu’s crimes were discovered.
Yiu pleaded guilty to the charges last month after he had considered almost 11 months in custody before trial.
Defence counsel said Yiu, his family’s breadwinner, had hoped to make investments and use the profits to pay for his mother’s medical.
Theft is punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment, but capped at three years when the case is heard in a magistrates’ court.
