Hong Kong Tourism Board Plans Fireworks and Drone Displays Starting in May

In an announcement made by the executive director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Dane Cheng Ting-yat, it has been revealed that the highly anticipated monthly fireworks and drone displays over Victoria Harbour are expected to commence in May. This exciting initiative is part of the city's efforts to attract tourists and enhance its tourism events.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has allocated a significant budget of nearly HK$1.1 billion specifically for organizing tourism events, including the drone show and fireworks display. This investment aims to create captivating experiences for visitors and showcase the vibrant spirit of Hong Kong.

Cheng emphasized that the Tourism Board is open to collaborating with organizations interested in sponsoring the drone and fireworks displays. However, he clarified that the two displays will not run concurrently due to legal constraints. The first show is anticipated to take place on May 1, coinciding with the Labour Day Golden Week.

It should be noted that the fireworks and drone displays may not occur on a fixed day each month. Instead, they might coincide with mega events or festival celebrations, adding an element of surprise and variety to the experience.

In addition to the fireworks and drone displays, the Hong Kong Tourism Board has also announced plans to revamp the renowned light-and-sound show, "A Symphony of Lights." The updated version is expected to be unveiled in the first half of 2025. Cheng expressed the need for a redesign, as the original show has been running for over 20 years. He cited examples of impressive night shows worldwide, such as Xi An's Datang Everbright City, and expressed his belief that the revamped show will highlight Hong Kong's unique characteristics even more.

To support the upgrade of "A Symphony of Lights," a budget of HK$100 million has been allocated. This funding will be utilized for enhancing the lighting equipment and installing hardware to synchronize the show with multiple buildings that are newly joining the spectacle. The format, performance days, duration, and potential special editions for festivals or holidays are currently under review.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board's initiatives to introduce fireworks and drone displays, as well as revamp "A Symphony of Lights," demonstrate their commitment to providing captivating and memorable experiences for both locals and tourists alike. These initiatives are expected to further enhance Hong Kong's reputation as a premier tourism destination.
