Hong Kong to welcome China's First Homemade Icebreaker "Xue Long 2"

China's first domestically produced icebreaker, Xue Long 2, will make its way to Hong Kong in April. The vessel has been invited by the Green Future Foundation Association and the Polar Research Institute of Hong Kong. Citizens will have the unique opportunity to board the icebreaker during its visit from April 8 to 12.

The Polar Research and Climate Change Exhibition will also kick off at the Hong Kong Science Museum on the following Monday, running until June 26, to coincide with the icebreaker's visit. Ho Kin-chung, the founder of the Polar Research Institute, expressed his belief that citizens will feel a profound sense of recognition as the icebreaker returns from China's 40th Antarctic expedition and docks in Hong Kong. Ho has been advocating for this second visit since last October, and his proposal has received overwhelming support from the government and various sectors.

During the visit, approximately 90 top scientists on board the icebreaker will engage in an exchange with over 200 students. The organizing committee, chaired by lawmaker Ma Fung-kwok, has planned a grand welcome ceremony. Government vessels, Star Ferry ships, and fishing boats will parade on the sea, while aircraft from the Government Flying Service will glide through the sky. The Ocean Terminal will host performances attended by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, officials from the Chinese liaison office, and senior officials from the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources.

It is expected that around 3,000 visitors will flock to the icebreaker over the course of five days, with daily visitation ranging from 500 to 1,000 visitors. The icebreaker will be open to the public from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm from April 9 to 11, and it will close early at 12:30 pm on April 12. Interested citizens can register using their real names on the online platform "uutix" starting at 11 am next Tuesday. The registration deadline has yet to be announced.

Ma mentioned that the organizers did not apply for the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund in time, stating that this event is primarily in cooperation with the Environment and Ecology Bureau.

The visit of China's first homemade icebreaker, Xue Long 2, to Hong Kong in April is expected to be a significant event, providing citizens with a unique opportunity to explore the vessel and engage in scientific exchange.
