The government announced on Friday that Hong Kong drivers will be able to obtain "electronic driving licenses" as soon as the end of this year.
Transport Commissioner Angela Lee said motorists will be required to use the "i-AM Smart" government app to verify their identity to obtain a paperless digital driving license.
The new system will make it easier for the officers to verify and obtain the driver's information through the QR code on the digital driver's license.
Commissioner Lee has confidence that the introduced measure will reduce wait times at the licensing of offices.
The process of renewing a vehicle license will also become simpler, and documents such as a private car roadworthiness certificate, vehicle registration document (commonly known as a license plate book) and insurance documents will no longer be required.
The ticketing system at the department's offices will be expanded in the first quarter of this year, the authority added.
A total of 980 tickets are issued daily by the four licensing offices to process driver's license services and driving test applications.
"The launch of additional electronic license services will greatly facilitate the public and simplify the application procedures for various traffic-related license plates and vehicle licenses," she said.
She also announced that the authorities will launch a vehicle "electronic permit" in the middle of this year.
She said further that the Transport Department is planning to establish an online license plate bidding platform so that interested buyers will not be affected by geographical restrictions.
