Hong Kong Observatory is anticipated to issue a No 3 typhoon signal as early as 4 pm on Friday as local winds are probably to get stronger at night.
The Observatory stated that a tropical depression was getting closer to the coast of western Guangdong province and would make landfall there between Friday night and early Saturday morning before moving inland.
“Its associated strong winds will gradually affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary,” the forecaster said. “Local winds will become southerlies gradually later today and are expected to strengthen slightly tonight.”
Therefore, No 3 typhoon signal could be issued between 4 pm and 6 pm on Friday, Observatory said.
On Saturday, Hong Kong will be showered with rains and experience strong winds at first as a result of the influence of a broad rainband to the south of the tropical depression, the forecaster said.
The tropical depression was over the northern part of the South China Sea and was estimated to be about 380km south-southwest of Hong Kong as of 10 am. It will maintain a distance of more than 250km from the city throughout the morning.
It was expected to move north at a speed of about 15km/h, edging closer to the western coast of Guangdong province, it was added.
The city has recorded occasionally strong winds offshore and in high places over the past few hours.
The Observatory warned the public of water swells and urged the public to stay away from shorelines.
Temperatures ranging between 26°C and 29°C should be expected on Friday in the city and there will be rainy weather over the weekend.
