Hong Kong's Global Happiness Ranking Drops to 86th Place

According to the recently released 2024 edition of the World Happiness Report, Hong Kong has experienced a decline in its global happiness ranking, falling from 82nd to 86th place. The report, compiled by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network in collaboration with various institutions, evaluates 143 countries and territories worldwide.

Finland continues to hold the top spot as the world's happiest nation for the seventh consecutive year. The report takes into account several factors, including per capita GDP, social support networks, average life expectancy, individual freedoms, generosity levels, and perceptions of corruption, to determine the rankings. The top ten countries on the list consist of Scandinavian nations, European countries, Australia, and other societies where social cohesion and well-being are prioritized.

In East Asia, Singapore and Taiwan lead the happiness index, ranking 30th and 31st respectively. Japan and South Korea occupy the 51st and 52nd positions, while China has seen a slight improvement, climbing to the 60th spot. However, the focus remains on Hong Kong's downward trajectory, raising concerns about the factors affecting the city's overall sense of well-being.

The World Happiness Report employs a methodology that considers average life evaluations over the past three years, providing a buffer against the impact of isolated events on happiness scores. This approach highlights the consistency of happiness in the top-ranking countries. Finland, in particular, boasts a societal structure built on trust, mutual aid, and equal access to high-quality health and education services, contributing to a strong sense of collective well-being among both locals and immigrants.

Notably, this year's report introduces separate rankings by age group, revealing a worrying decline in life satisfaction among the youth in certain regions, including North America. This generational disparity in happiness levels has significantly affected the United States' position, causing it to drop out of the top 20 for the first time since the report's inception.

Despite the challenges faced by some nations, the report also highlights positive trends in Eastern European countries, which have seen considerable increases in happiness. This shift underscores the dynamic nature of national well-being and the potential for improvement across diverse cultural and economic landscapes.

Overall, the latest World Happiness Report indicates Hong Kong's slip in global happiness rankings, prompting a closer examination of the factors influencing the city's overall well-being.
