After a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, the highly anticipated Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament has made a triumphant return, boosting the city's appeal and attracting international visitors. The three-day sporting event, taking place from April 5th to 7th, has already sold out, signaling a strong resurgence in interest.
Co-sponsored by Cathay Pacific and HSBC, the Rugby Sevens tournament is part of a series of prominent events held in the special administrative region this year. It follows the successful Art Basel fair, which showcased contemporary art in Asia, and precedes the upcoming global investment summit organized by HSBC, scheduled from April 8th to 10th.
According to the Hong Kong China Rugby Union, overseas ticket sales for the Sevens have rebounded to over 40% of the total capacity of the 40,000-seat venue in 2024. This increase is attributed to high demand from countries such as Britain, Australia, and Fiji. In comparison, overseas ticket sales accounted for only 23% in 2023 and a mere 3% in 2022, reflecting the impact of strict COVID-19 measures that discouraged many tourists.
This year's tournament is expected to be the final edition held at the Hong Kong Stadium before it transitions to a new 50,000-seat venue at the recently constructed Kai Tak Sports Park in the following year.
Hong Kong has already proven its ability to host major sporting events with the successful staging of the World Triathlon Cup in March. The event took place against the stunning backdrop of Victoria Harbour and the city's bustling financial district. Additionally, the Liv Golf tournament was held in the northern part of the city, near the border with the mainland city of Shenzhen.
The return of international visitors to the former British colony is gradually gaining momentum, as recent figures indicate a 12% increase in visitor arrivals during the first two months of this year. Approximately 7.83 million individuals have visited Hong Kong, compared to the same period in 2023.
The Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament not only showcases the city's sporting prowess but also serves as a significant boost to its international appeal. As visitors from around the world flock to witness the thrilling competition, Hong Kong solidifies its position as a premier destination for major events, further revitalizing its tourism industry and economy.
