Director of Housing in Hong Kong, Miss LAW Shuk Pui, Rosanna said on Saturday on a radio program that nearly 5,000 Hong Kong public flats have been retrieved over the past two years from wealthy tenants, comparing the reclaimed flats equivalent to a medium-sized public estate, with a construction cost of about HK$5 billion (US$640m).
The official stated that among involved include those whose financial capability is uncovered through expensive cars seen around the public buildings and some others who own properties across the border.
“The crackdown on abuse [of public rental flats] is very meaningful and we will carry on,” she said in an interview.
The government flats that normally take a few years to construct can just take a few months to renovate after retrieving them for reallocation, Law said.
In regards to the revised housing rules, all tenants should now have to declare their income and assets every couple of years, an obligation that used to be every 10 years.
It was stated that almost all of the 250,000 household tenants who have lived in public housing for 10 years or more have completed their income and asset declarations. There are 1,800 of them who have proactively returned flats to authorities, report said.
However, around 70 households had failed to declare on time and the government had already issued them letters to hand back the flats, it was added.
