Hong Kong Recognized in Top Ten of World Bank's Business Ready 2024 Report

On October 3, 2024, the World Bank Group released its first-ever Business Ready 2024 Report, ranking Hong Kong among the top ten economies out of 50 assessed globally. The report evaluates business environments across three main pillars and ten specific topics, showcasing Hong Kong's strengths in international trade, business entry, and utility services.

Hong Kong achieved notable scores, earning 90.77 points in the "International Trade" category, 85.49 in "Business Entry," and 77.71 in "Utility Services." Overall, the city secured the fifth position in the "Operational Efficiency" pillar with a score of 78.52.

A government spokesperson expressed satisfaction with the report's findings, highlighting Hong Kong's status as an international trading hub characterized by clear regulations for business entry and a stable utility infrastructure. The spokesperson also emphasized Hong Kong's dual role as a gateway for overseas businesses entering Asia and as a launchpad for Mainland Chinese companies expanding globally.

The report underscores Hong Kong's minimal restrictions on international trade in services and its commitment to best practices in company registration and information transparency. These aspects reinforce its reputation as a "super-connector" and valuable player in the global business arena.

In addition to this recognition, recent accolades include a fifth-place global ranking in the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2024 by the International Institute for Management Development and a third-place ranking in the Global Financial Centres Index, where Hong Kong topped the Asia-Pacific region for its business environment, human capital, infrastructure, and overall reputation.

However, the spokesperson noted that the report could better reflect certain aspects of Hong Kong's business landscape, such as its common law implementation and strong rule of law. The government plans to maintain dialogue with the World Bank Group to provide a more comprehensive understanding of Hong Kong's business environment and the policies that support it.
