Hong Kong police have begun to increase their patrols in the city as the war between Israel and Hamas (Palestine) escalates. Hong Kong religious leaders are also asked to be alert for “suspicious individuals”.
Police authority said, “Officers have reached out to [Jewish and Muslim] community leaders in the city to inquire if they need any assistance."
“We have also requested them to inform us if they observe anything abnormal or spot suspicious individuals.”
It was learned that police had asked religious leaders in the city whether they planned to hold any major gatherings or religious events to ensure police could deploy personnel appropriately.
It was said further that police had stepped up patrols at some locations such as the Kowloon Mosque in Tsim Sha Tsui but it was not clearly explained if the patrol would be increased at the Israeli consulate in Admiralty.
“Frontline officers have been instructed to spend more time patrolling around these sites and to be vigilant for any suspicious persons,” police said.
Israel has vowed to wipe out Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the enclave, in response to the October 7 terrorist attacks that killed 1,400 people. More than 2,700 people have died in Israeli airstrikes, the Palestinian health ministry said.
