In an effort to address the increasing number of traffic accidents in Hong Kong, the police have announced a comprehensive crackdown on both errant drivers and pedestrians. Beginning on March 18, law enforcement officers will be deployed across the city to tackle issues such as jaywalking, drink driving, speeding, mobile phone usage while driving, and disregarding traffic lights and signs.
The decision to intensify enforcement measures was prompted by a troubling rise in traffic accidents last year compared to the previous year. Statistics provided by the police indicate that there were 1,009 fatal and serious accidents in 2023, with 98 resulting in fatalities. This represents a 10% increase in the number of deaths compared to 2022.
Of the total fatalities, 62 or 63% were pedestrians, with 39 of them being aged 65 and above. Distracted driving emerged as the leading cause of accidents, accounting for 322 cases—a 20% increase from 2022. Goods vehicles were involved in 27% of the accidents, followed by taxis at 20% and mini buses at 16%.
While jaywalking by pedestrians has been identified as a significant contributor to the rise in traffic accidents, the police will also focus on cracking down on pedestrian violators. In addition to law enforcement efforts, various departments, including the police, will conduct promotional and educational activities throughout Hong Kong to raise awareness about road safety.
The implementation of these stringent measures aims to create a safer and more disciplined traffic environment in Hong Kong, reducing the number of accidents and ensuring the well-being of both drivers and pedestrians.
