Hong Kong Police Break Up HK$13 Million Prostitution Syndicate on Telegram; Six Arrested

On September 5, 2024, Hong Kong police announced the dismantling of a prostitution ring that generated over HK$13 million through a Telegram chat group. The operation, named “Operation Fiery Arrow,” led to the arrest of six individuals, including two alleged ringleaders—a couple aged 22 to 61—who orchestrated the complex scheme.

The Telegram group, which had more than 25,000 members, facilitated the illicit trade of sexual services disguised as “part-time girlfriends.” Chief Inspector Sun Yi-ki from the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) explained that the group allowed clients to browse profiles, with a VIP membership providing access to service reviews and preferred worker selections.

During the raids, authorities seized 10 mobile phones, two laptops, and froze HK$2 million in bank accounts linked to the illicit operation. The suspects reportedly used numerous personal and proxy accounts to launder the proceeds, making it difficult for law enforcement to track the financial transactions.

Police emphasized that relying on others for prostitution income is a serious offense, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. They reiterated that committing crimes online does not exempt individuals from legal consequences, pledging to pursue all criminals rigorously.
