Hong Kong police arrested 23 people on various violations of e-bike driving

23 people including men and women have been arrested in the New Territories by the Hong Kong police over the weekend on suspicion of illegally driving electric bicycles and other powered vehicles.


The operation was carried out on Friday and Saturday in Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung, Tsing Yi, Sha Tin, Ma On Shan and Lantau Island.


The arrest is the second of such in 2 weeks. This time, 17 men and six women, aged 18 to 53 were arrested for offences including driving an unlicensed vehicle, using a motorised vehicle without third-party insurance, driving without a valid licence and driving a motorcycle without wearing a helmet, the police reported on Sunday.



The arrest included a man who was suspected of permitting others to drive a vehicle that was not registered and without third-party insurance. Another violator was taken into detention for testing positive under the influence of substances while driving.


They seized 12 e-bicycles, nine e-scooters and one electric hoverboard.


Driving without a vehicle registration licence is a violation of the Road Traffic Ordinance and is punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a HK$10,000 fine.


Under the Road Traffic Ordinance, a mechanically or electrically propelled bicycle is classified as a motorised vehicle.

無車輛登記執照駕駛即屬違反《道路交通條例》,最高可被判處監禁 12 個月及罰款港幣 10,000 元。


根據《道路交通條例》,機械或電力驅動的自行車被歸類為機動車輛。
