Hong Kong Observatory will consider to issue Typhoon signal 8 later on Thursday

The Hong Kong Observatory announced on Thursday that it will consider to issue the Typhoon signal 8 between 4pm - 7pm today because of the Super Typhoon Yagi that continues to strengthen and move closer to the city.

“Yagi is a mature storm. Under the influence of its outer circulation, local winds generally strengthened this morning with occasional gale winds on high ground,” the forecaster said.

Hong Kong weather watchdog said that Yagi is expected to skirt 300km (186 miles) to the southwest of Hong Kong on Thursday night and Friday morning.

“Gales associated with Yagi are set to edge closer to the Pearl River Estuary later today. Local winds will strengthen further and weather will deteriorate,” it said, adding the warning might be issued between 4pm and 7pm.

At 8am, Yagi was estimated to be about 390km south-southeast of Hong Kong.

The forecaster reminded the public to stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports. Outdoor workers should also be vigilant of the weather changes.
