Hong Kong Observatory Updates Forecast, Expects Minimum Temperature of 9°C Next Week

The Hong Kong Observatory has revised its forecast, predicting a significant drop in temperatures in the urban area next week. On Tuesday, January 23rd, the minimum temperature is expected to reach 9°C, while on Wednesday, January 24th, it is anticipated to remain at the same level. The New Territories may experience even colder temperatures, possibly a few degrees lower.

This adjustment in the forecast comes after the observatory recorded the lowest temperature of the winter season on December 17, 2023. The influence of the easterly airstream along the coast of Guangdong is gradually easing, resulting in warmer daytime temperatures in the region. However, a cold front is expected to move across the southern coast of China from Saturday night to Sunday morning, leading to a noticeable temperature drop on Sunday.

Saturday marks the arrival of the "Dahan" solar term, and the urban areas are predicted to experience relatively warm temperatures ranging from 18 to 26°C. In fact, this could challenge the record for the warmest "Dahan" since 1969, which reached 26.4°C. The northern part of the New Territories may even see temperatures reaching 28°C. The weather is expected to be mostly cloudy with periods of sunshine and warm conditions during the day. However, as the cold front arrives in the evening, there may be a few showers, and temperatures will gradually decrease. By Sunday morning, the temperature is forecasted to drop to 15°C, representing an overnight decrease of 11 degrees.

It is advised for participants in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon to exercise caution, as continuous showers throughout the night could result in slippery roads.
