Hong Kong Observatory to Assess Strong Wind Signal No. 3 This Afternoon; All Day Schools Closed Today

As Super Typhoon Yagi continues to affect Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Observatory will evaluate whether to issue Strong Wind Signal No. 3 this afternoon. The typhoon has recently shifted to a more westerly path, but its strong winds are still impacting the Pearl River Estuary this morning. Currently, Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 remains in effect until at least noon.

A Thunderstorm Warning that was issued yesterday at 6:50 PM has been extended until 10:30 AM today. In addition to strong winds, Yagi's intense rainbands are causing heavy squally showers across the territory. Residents are urged to stay away from coastal areas and avoid water sports due to rough seas.

Recent reports show maximum sustained winds of 98 km/h at Ngong Ping, 66 km/h at Tai Mei Tuk, and 60 km/h at Cheung Chau Beach, with gusts exceeding 120 km/h, 83 km/h, and 81 km/h, respectively. The Hong Kong Home Affairs Department has opened 30 temporary shelters, which have provided refuge for 262 individuals so far.

The Fire Services Department has received reports of fallen trees, but there have been no landslides or flooding incidents. As of 6 AM today, three people sought medical treatment at public hospitals during the storm, including two men and one woman.

Looking ahead, Typhoon Yagi is forecasted to move across the northern South China Sea towards Hainan Island and the Leizhou Peninsula. Conditions are expected to remain windy with heavy showers and thunderstorms along the Guangdong coast. While showers may ease early next week, a broad area of low pressure is anticipated to affect the seas east of Taiwan.

All day schools, including primary and secondary institutions, are closed today, with further announcements regarding evening classes to follow. The Hospital Authority has suspended outpatient services while the No. 8 signal is active, although Accident and Emergency services will continue to operate normally.

The Social Welfare Department has also closed all welfare service units and centers during the No. 8 signal, with plans to resume operations two hours after the signal is lifted, depending on weather conditions.
